心臓発作などの心臓血管病のリスクがベネフィットを上回るとして、EUでは使用の中止勧告が行われている抗肥満薬シブトラミン塩酸塩水和物（商品名 Meridia など）（TOPICS 2010.01.22）ですが、米国でも15日開催されたFDAの内分泌・代謝性医薬品諮問委員会（Endocrinological and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee）で、販売継続が妥当かどうかの検討が行われています。

委員による議論の結果、引き続き販売を認めるかどうかについては、16の委員中賛成と反対が8人づつという真っ二つに意見が分かれたそうです。

Medpage TODAY などによると、減量の効果について委員の考え方に開きがあることや、薬が高価であり保険が適用されないこと（つまり、使用する人は限られる）、他に治療法がない人のためのオプションとして残しておくべきなどの意見が出て、諮問委員会としては一つの意見としてまとまらなかったようです。
最終的な結論は、FDAに委ねられることになりますが、販売継続反対の意見が多数を占めなかったことから、おそらく販売は継続になるものと思われます。
ただ、販売継続となった場合、くすりとしての存在自体が容認されるわけですから、日本でいうところの健康食品（ダイエットピル）に混入されたり、健康リスクを知らずに個人輸入により使用されるといった問題も残ることとなります。そういった社会的リスクも検討しての評決が行われたかどうかはわかりません。
